Edinburgh’s Royal High last week recognised two more old boys and placed a plaque in their memory next to that of Walter Scott. Clarinettist Sandy Brown and trumpeter Al Fairweather were at the centre of Scottish jazz from the late 1940s. The school’s young musician concert was then enlivened by a session from Brown and Fairweather contemporaries, who made up a band described by one listener as the Geriatric Stompers.
