All in the name

Delegates at the NASUWT conference will be asked whether the union should finally shorten its long-winded name.

Under the proposal, backed by 28 of the union’s local associations, it would change from the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers to the National Association of Schoolteachers or NAS (not NASTE).

Chris Keates, the union’s general secretary, said its executive would oppose the change. “This debate surfaces from time to time, but our members usually come to a sensible conclusion,” she said. “We’ve not seen much interest from our members nationally in a new name.”
