The treasures of Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum are being brought to life for youngsters who feel more confident speaking to a computer than another person, in what is a first for a British museum.
The Centre of New Enlightenment scheme (TCONE) provides children aged 10-14 with tasks they must complete using handheld computers, from finding a puffin to translating hieroglyphics.
Kelvingrove conducted months of research to discover how youngsters thought the centre should run. John MacBeath, chair of educational leadership at Cambridge University, has written a paper examining the benefits of the tour. He suggests the handheld device helps pupils engage with the exhibits and increases their confidence.
TCONE is the first tour of its kind for young people at a British museum.
