Art means business

Original works of art can be purchased at an unusual new exhibition, where most of the artists haven’t yet hit their teenage years. Typography, self-portraits and collages produced by S1 and 2 pupils at Stewarton Academy can be bought for pound;5-15.

While the art department encouraged students to produce the 70 pieces, it was business lessons that helped the project come to fruition.

Enterprise students promoted the exhibition and came up with the title, “2.7 Art Heaven”, named after their class.

Staff at the school believe the project is a prime example of the cross-curricular work envisaged in A Curriculum for Excellence.

“It’s an opportunity to get the work out and share it, rather than having it tucked away,” said art teacher Louisa Maestranzi.

Any profits are likely to go towards another similar show and a visit to one of Scotland’s famous art galleries.

The exhibition, held at the East Ayrshire school, can be visited by arrangement until April 25, and during a parents’ evening on March 26.
