Arts equals achievement

THE CHAIRMAN of the Scottish Arts Council says that the arts have a significant role to play in raising achievement. Magnus Linklater spoke of an “inspirational” visit to a south London school which had been transformed through intensive opportunities for the pupils to perform on stage and work with musicians, artists and writers.

Pupils were now performing at or above the national average in every subject, Mr Linklater said. “It gave them something they had hitherto lacked completely: the realisation that they too had something to contribute, and a peer group ready to applaud them.”
