ASL - Handy online manual

A new online manual that can be used by teachers to help them meet the additional support needs of pupils has been produced by Perth and Kinross Council.

It is the result of an authority-wide review of the quality of provision for children and young people with additional support needs.

With a section on 30 “successful support stories”, the manual’s emphasis on examples of best practice within Curriculum for Excellence distinguishes it from previous ASN guidance, said Win Wood, the council’s support for young people service manager.

“The focus on practical guidance in this manual is what really marks it out. It’s something that’s needed nationally,” she said.

The new resource will help staff “respond positively to the demands of the 2005 and 2009 ASL acts and the increased rights for parents”.

Presented in flip-book format, the manual includes sections on legislative requirements, philosophical principles and practical guidance on self- evaluation of additional support needs.
