A device to help quadriplegics operate a computer and a gadget to warn sunbathers when they are overdoing it were among the winning entries for this year’s Young Electronic Designer Awards.

Supported by Mercury Communications, Texas Instruments and the Institution of Electrical Engineers, the contest challenges 12 to 25-year-olds to find solutions to everyday needs using modern technology.

Prizes include up to Pounds 2,500 shared by student and school or university, computers and communications equipment. The closing date for 1997 entries is January 31, and final judging at the London Science Museum on March 25-26.
