Speaking of EIS folks, Jock Houston, the Borders linchpin, was in usual anarchic mood last week. Houston sprang to the defence of language teaching and informed councillors on the education committee that most of his Hawick pupils were indeed thirled to the idea of language learning.

“You might say they have to learn two foreign languages,” he conjectured.

“Taking early retirement, Mr Houston?” ventured Bill Smith, Independent councillor and former primary heidie.
