Being a punchbag is not our job

Although I have every sympathy with the teacher assaulted by an angry parent (“Parent tried to throttle me”, TES Magazine, March 19), I found his closing words very disconcerting: “Being assaulted is an unfortunate hazard that comes with the job.”

Perhaps in boxing, but I found it worrying that a teacher who had been forced out of work for 11 months by the assault would consider it part of the job. When are we going to establish that in no other profession would you tolerate foul language and physical attacks as part of the working day?

Never should teachers go into work feeling that they may be physically attacked as part of their day-to-day job. Never.
