Lively, humorous and informal, this contemporary recorder tutor series for beginners will have wide appeal. The four tutor books can be bought on their own, but performance CDs and backing tracks are available with follow-up material on Recorder Magic’s web site.
Book 1 starts with an exploration of some recorder sound effects which will catch pupils’ imaginations and help to avoid the common problem of blowing too hard. Rhythm notation is presented with catchy word patterns and rhymes.
Notes are introduced in the conventional order (B A G E high C) with strong primary colours, red and black for book one, helping to keep the eye focused on the music. By the end of book four, all notes between low C and high G have been taught.
Duets and rounds offer plenty of opportunities to build up group music making skills. In some pieces body and vocal sounds inject dramatic effect. A variety of styles and idioms are reflected in both traditional and original material ranging from nursery rhymes to classical and jazz.
Some reassuringly familiar tunes such as “Peas Pudding Hot” and the more advanced “When All the Saints” and “Jingle Bells” are included.
