UNION CALLS for boards of management to be opened up to wider scrutiny won support from Bob Beattie of the funding council who commended the health trust he sat on, which opened its meetings to the press (except for confidential items) and held public meetings twice a year.

The funding council has just embarked on a review of FE management at the behest of the Education Minister. The remit reveals that the Government not only wants answers on how effective managements are but how their performance can be monitored and shortcomings rectified.

The STUC conference lambasted boards for being secretive and excluding staff. “If there is to be transparency in FE nationally, the same should apply within each college,” one group stated.
