The Standing Conference on Studies in Education has awarded its major book prize for 1997 to Professor Carol Fitz-Gibbon of the University of Durham.
The Pounds 1,000 prize for the best education book by an established author was awarded for Monitoring Education, published by Cassell.
Professor Fitz-Gibbon is to donate half the prize money to the Office for Standards in Inspection, a forum that is promoting more rigorous inspection methods.
