THE A-Z OF SCHOOL HEALTH. By Adrian Brooke and Steve Welton. David Fulton pound;20

This handbook, a collaboration between a consultant paediatrician and a headteacher, provides a quick run-down on just about every medical condition likely to turn up in school, and quite a few more besides. So when you learn that one of your pupils has otitis media, for example, you’ll be able to find out just what it is (inflammation of the middle ear), that it’s quite common, and that it usually clears up with no ill effects, but can hang on and cause hearing problems.

This level of clarity is evident for all the entries, each of which also provides useful links to support groups and websites. This is one for the headteacher’s bookshelf.
