Eatrite, Look Right, Feel Great: the Story of Juan and Claire. A Video Drama that Promotes Healthy Eating. By J Harmer and C Webster. Beckmann Communications (IoM) Pounds 23.48

Here is an example of the emerging genre of “edutainment”. Aimed at nine to 13-year-olds, it tells the story of two rivals for a coveted part in an MTV video. The audition is somewhat improbable and the choreography even more so, but the plot takes an unexpected turn, and is wittily presented. The video succeeds in asking plausible questions about healthy eating in the context of contemporary teenage lifestyles and pop culture.

The mini-melodrama lasts about 20 minutes; another seven minutes is taken up comparing the calorie intakes of Juan and Claire, the rival dancers. A teacher’s pack provides pupil worksheets and makes some modest links to nutrition science and the development of self-esteem. A reference to anorexia in the video is not picked up in the notes.
