Bristol - Early finish angers parents

7th May 2010, 1:00am

Parents at a Bristol school have reacted angrily to a decision to end term two weeks early so teachers can move into a new building.

Filton High School has told parents it will shorten the summer term by eight days in order to give teachers and school staff time to relocate to a new #163;30 million complex, due to open in September.

Parents have bombarded the local paper with letters complaining that they will have to take time off work to look after their children during the extended holidays.

One mother of a 12-year-old pupil wrote: “We have it drummed into us that we can’t take children out of lessons during term time for things such as holidays, but it’s all right for the school to end term early.”

The school said it had tried to keep disruption to a minimum, and apologised for any inconvenience caused. DM.
