The road can be highly dangerous for young drivers. The British School of Motoring has devised two study packs, Ignition and Signal, which encourage teenagers to think about road sense with their teachers. They explore social questions such as car dependence and congestion and examine scientific matters such as optical deceptions. Most important, they open up the psychology of driving - aggression, roadrage, power and risk are all part of the programme. They are an excellent bridge between theory and skill.

Ignition (for 15 to17-year-olds) costs pound;125 and Signal (for 17 to 20-year-olds) costs pound;75 from BSM education sector, Merchants Granary, 15-17 Cheapside, Wakefield, West Yorkshire WF1 2SD. Tel: 01924 298631. Fax: 01924 298629. Email: education.sector@bsm.co.uk Website: www.bsm.co.uk
