The European Youth Portal, launched in Brussels by Viviane Reding (right) and Dalia Grybauskaite, Commissioners for Education, Youth and Culture, has been developed in response to the European Commission’s 2001 white paper, “A New Impetus for European Youth”. It set out to address the needs of the estimated 75 million young people in the European Union.
The site aims to help young people to make informed choices about their future. It offers a wealth of information in five sections: studying; working; volunteering and exchanges; rights; and general youth information.
At the launch, the Commissioners took questions from young people from all over the newly extended EU. Two screens provided real-time translations of queries about jobs, study and voluntary work.
The new portal provides access to more than 10,000 sites in 20 EU languages, and promises to be an invaluable resource for the young people of Europe who, according to Commissioner Reding, are destined to be “leading players” in the future. She said the portal would be a vital tool for generations to co-operate and “make a better Europe”.
