Champions to promote green living

Colleges will be expected to appoint conservation “champions” to promote the protection of the environment under proposals announced this week.

The champions will be required to develop effective waste management and travel plans, ensure colleges manage and design buildings efficiently, and use environmentally-friendly learning materials across the curriculum.

The plan is for every college and training organisation to have at least one “knowledgeable and committed” champion to promote sustainable development.

The proposals follow a report, by the Learning and Skills Development Agency, in which the post-16 sector is lambasted for being behind the private sector in adopting eco-friendly practices.

The Learning and Skills Council has published a consultation document on “changing the culture so all providers and learners will know about SD”.

Colleges are invited to submit responses to the document, titled From here to sustainability, by March 31.
