Every secondary in England is to get a pound;500 government grant to run its own charity under Home Office plans to encourage a culture of giving among children. Pupils will be encouraged to raise cash to build up the account and decide which charities should receive the money. But John Dunford, general secretary of the Secondary Heads Association, has expressed reservations.
He said schools were already very active in giving to charities, adding: “Surely asking schools to hand out government funds is not the best way to teach students about citizenship and responsibility.”
