Children’s laureate comes to Scotland

20th February 2004, 12:00am
The Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo, author of Private Peaceful, Cool!, Kensuke’s Kingdom and The Butterfly Lion among dozens of other books, will kick off his literary tour of Scotland tomorrow.

He will travel to schools, libraries and theatres from Stornoway to Dumfries and Ullapool to Angus on a tour sponsored by Scottish Friendly Assurance. It starts tomorrow afternoon at Glasgow’s Mitchell Theatre and will run until June.

One of the highlights of the tour will be a special event at the Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh on World Book Day, March 4. More than 800 children will hear him share his stories.

Morpurgo’s books have won him international acclaim. He was a primary teacher but soon realised that he could hold the attention of his class most successfully when he told his own stories. Since then he has not stopped writing. He has more than 90 titles to his name, with translations into more than a dozen languages.
