Focus on a school day or event for World Day Against Child Labour on June 12.
Explore child labour through research, discussion and debate. What are the facts and causes? If children are protected by rights, then why are they so widely exploited? Are all working children exploited? What possible solutions are there? Are rich countries responsible for these children? Use this article and visit the International Labour Organisation website (www.ilo.org) for images, fact sheets, and a history of how children’s rights have developed.
Use drama to portray the issues. Maths could “make sense of the numbers” by presenting child labour figures as proportions of the school’s population.
Arrange for pupils to contact their local Member of Parliament, Member of the European Parliament, and media to help raise awareness and promote change. Through the school council pupils could also fundraise for a charity dealing with child exploitation.
