Five Scottish schools are celebrating after winning an International School Award, sponsored by the Department of Children, Schools and Families in London and the Scottish and Welsh devolved governments.

The Scottish winners were St Thomas Primary, Keith; Cauldeen Primary, Inverness; Knox Academy, Haddington; St George’s School for Girls, Edinburgh; and Shawlands Academy, Glasgow.

The awards, presented by BBC news presenter George Alagiah in London last week, recognised their outstanding work in integrating international education into their school curriculum and encouraging their students to become global citizens.

St Thomas Primary achieved its ISA by forming links with schools in Ireland, Canada, France, Poland and Pakistan. It developed a range of activities across the curriculum, including exchanging letters about their community life in Moray with pen-pals in Canada, and working with children in Poland to produce a bilingual calendar and art exhibition which was displayed in their local library. Some of the younger children also learned Irish from a visiting Donegal teacher.
