FIGURES from the Scottish Office show teachers have suffered a pay cut of 2 per cent in real terms over the past four years.
In a parliamentary answer to Donald Gorrie, the Scottish Liberal Democrat spokesman on education, the Secretary of State revealed that, after allowing for inflation, teachers’ salaries fell by 1.4 per cent in 1995, rose by 0.6 per cent in 1996, fell by 0.6 per cent in 1997 and fell by another 0.6 per cent this year.
Mr Gorrie said teachers and other council staff were “paying the price for Labour’s two years of continuing the Tory cuts”.
