College shops for ideas

A college has opened its own shop to promote entrepreneurship and retail skills. Park Lane College’s Keighley campus has launched The Store in the West Yorkshire town centre to provide an outlet for eight new businesses.

A neighbouring training facility, called The Academy, will train people in retail skills.

It follows the earlier launch of a business start-up centre at the college, which offered low-cost premises for new companies to develop their ideas and to receive advice on how to grow.

The eight-unit shop, funded by Bradford Council, aims to help new companies test the market. Its first businesses range from a greeting cards and art shop to jewellery.
