An anonymous charity has given pound;1 million to help schools achieve specialist technology status like Greensward college, in Hockley, Essex. The cash will help 50 schools in deprived areas raise the necessary sponsorship money.

Sir Cyril Taylor, head of the Technology Colleges’ Trust, said: “This is wonderful support. We can help schools who are finding it difficult to raise the full pound;50,000.”

Meanwhile, the country’s top universities are to build scientific links with schools. Most of the elite “Russell Group” of universities will provide professional development for teachers, as well encouraging pupils to to pursue science subjects beyond school. Photograph by SIMON CLARK
