A British team came second overall at the 15th International Biology Olympiad held in Brisbane, Australia, in July. Gold medals were awarded to James Attwater, Eton College, and Gregory Dickens, Wellington College, while Michael Carratt, from St Paul’s School, London and Victoria Male, from City of London Girls’ School received silver medals. This competition for secondary students tests their skills in tackling biological problems and experiments. Each participating country sends four students who are the winners of their respective national competitions. For IBO 2005 details contact the Institute of Biology.

The Institute of Physics is offering individual cash awards of up to pound;1,500 to support local science teachers, enthusiasts or organisations in holding events or activities during Einstein Year (2005) that help make physics interesting and relevant to everyone. Closing date for Round 1 is September 24 and for Round 2, February 25.
