How refreshing to be reminded by Geoff Barton of the values and value of comprehensive education (“Proud of state students and their achievements”, 1 June), and what a contrast with Kenneth Durham’s article “There is no unfairness in our success”, trumpeting the virtues of the private sector. Mr Durham would have us believe that the “success” of private schools is not down to wealth, selectivity or class elitism but to “recognising the needs of individual students”. Clearly something we do not do in the state sector. Their success also stems from “the belief of all students and families that education is genuinely and hugely important”. Note to heads of state schools: remember to include section on “importance of education” in next newsletter.
