Computerised signing

Sign language words and phrases from around Scotland are to be video-recorded by experts from Heriot-Watt University as part of a pound;1.2 million project to produce a computerised database of British Sign Language which could help explain the variation in the vocabulary and grammar of BSL around the UK.

Graham Turner, who holds the chair of translation and interpreting at Heriot Watt’s School of Management and Languages, said the new information that would result from the project would feed directly into the university’s current Scottish Government-backed graduate diploma programme to nurture a new generation of BSL teachers in Scotland.
