Conflict over tests

The two local authority organisations have fallen out over the Government’s plans to publish league tables of primary schools based on the results of national curriculum tests for 11-year-olds.

The Association of County Councils has asked Gillian Shephard, the Education and Employment Secretary, to drop the league tables. However, the Labour-controlled Association of Metropolitan Authorities has written to Mrs Shephard commending the decision to “allow parental access” to the test results.
