In the wake of the British Museum’s decision not to introduce admission charges, Chris Smith, Secretary for Culture, Media and Sport, has published a consultation paper on developing a code of good practice on access to national museums and galleries, including levying charges.
Mr Smith said admissions charges were not an issue to be addressed in isolation. Other considerations, such as inflexible opening hours, unimaginative presentation of exhibits and the sheer cost of travel to museums, could all be potential barriers to visitors.
