ITALY Leading judges and public prosecutors want children to learn about the Mafia at school. The idea is not new, but this time a summit meeting of magistrates from the front line of the never-ending war against the Mafia has called for educazione alla legilita to become an integral part of the timetable.

β€œIt is time to break the vicious circle whereby a political assassination leads to fresh laws, followed by new trials and convictions, and then a sense of complacency until the next major assassination,” explained Signor Luciano Violante, of the Parliamentary anti-Mafia commission, opening the informal summit in Florence. The magistrates believe that long-term success can be achieved by attacking Mafia culture in the classroom.
