Primary teachers have made significant progress in teaching pupils to calculate mentally under the National Numeracy Strategy, says Ofsted, but there is room for improvement. The report, Teaching of Calculation in Primary Schools, finds that pupils make little use of jottings, and worksheets and commercial schemes leave insufficient space to scribble. Pupils rarely use estimation before doing a calculation, the report says, and so fail to recognise an improbable result.
