Cresson replacement appointed;In brief

VIVIANE Reding, 48, a Luxembourg journalist with a doctorate from the Sorbonne, is the new European Union Commissioner for education and culture. She replaces the disgraced Edith Cresson, accused of cronyism and mismanagement. She was part of former president Jacques Santer’s discredited team which resigned en masse in March over fraud allegations.
