Contemporary culture conference
The National Society for Education in Art and Design is hosting an international conference on October 8. The event, with the theme of contemporary culture, will take place at Liverpool John Moores University. The keynote speaker will be Professor Dennis Atkinson, author of Art in Education: Identity and Practice and Pedagogy Against the State. If you would like to present a paper at the conference, email a 150-200 word abstract to Emma Fitzgerald, conference administrator, on e.fitzgerald@ljmu.ac.uk by June 11. Pupils’ work in national display
An exhibition of work by primary school pupils is now on display at the National Gallery in London. The gallery invited schools throughout the UK to use a painting from its collection as a stimulus for learning. Hundreds of primaries took part in this year’s challenge, based on Renoir’s `The Umbrellas’. A selection of pictures will be on show until September 19 and admission is free.
Children’s Art Day offer
Grants of pound;50 are on offer for schools registering early for this year’s Children’s Art Day. Events must take place between July 12 and 18 and the first 150 registered will be eligible for the grant. This year’s event is open to schools across the UK. The national programme, run by the Clore Duffield Foundation, encourages children, young people, families and teachers to engage with visual art. At last year’s art day there were 230 events involving 50,000 young people. New this year is a visual art competition for London schools on the use of drawing as a way of developing art and design projects. For details and to register, visit www.engage.org.
