June 23-27: Child Safety Week
What’s the big idea?
Through Child Safety Week, the Child Accident Prevention Trust hopes to raise awareness of the causes of childhood accidents and how to prevent them. This year’s theme is Make a Change. Make a Difference.
Assembly ideas
With key stage 1 pupils, focus on how to cross the road safely. Both the PowerPoint on The TES website and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents’ (Rospa) assembly plans could be useful.
For key stage 2 pupils, discuss where children can and cannot play in their neighbourhood. The resource on the TeacherNet website does this, as well as making sure that pupils know their full name, address and telephone number and how to call the emergency services. You could add to this by showing pupils pictures of secure and unsecure places to play. You could ask pupils to vote whether they think each location is safe.
With secondary school pupils, look at road safety. Again, the Rospa assembly plans could help. Alternatively, you could focus on rail safety. The Railway Crime Consequences resource highlights the dangers and legal consequences of inappropriate behaviour on or near railway tracks. This can be found on the Teachingzone website.
