Democracy rules

The Educational Institute of Scotland is demanding that college boards of management are run more democratically. It points out that legislation specifies only three seats - two elected by the staff and one nominated by students. The ability of boards to nominate all the other members “gives rise to the belief, or perception, that membership of some college boards may be arbitrary and susceptible to allegations of cronyism or patronage”, the EIS suggests.
