Despair of a lost generation

Matt MacIver, registrar of the GTC, warned that the new induction arrangements for probationer teachers must not create another “lost generation”.

Since 1995, some 5,500 teachers had remained on the provisional register and could not find full-time employment, including 438 history teachers who “were still out there”.

They saw themselves as a lost generation and feared the new induction system would leave them at the back of the queue.

“If funded properly the new system will work, but I am worried about the debate on different ways of appointing probationers, such as four teachers being allocated to three schools.”
