If Sir Ron’s reputation is squeaky-clean, one of his staff seems to be attracting attentions of entirely the wrong sort. The authority has just undergone a major MORI consultation on its deliberations on moral values, concluding broadly that the Word of Dr Nick is fine by the general public.

At one of these morality consultations - involving governors in the London borough of Southwark - the wrong impression might erroneously have been given by a young SCAA official. Taking a careful note of proceedings, she absent-mindedly took one of those ubiquitous yellow Post-It notes and stuck it on the table. Only after a slight frisson stirred among her neighbours did the anonymous official glance down to see what the trouble might be. It said: “If you like pain, this is your man.”

Understandably, she didn’t even bother to explain that it had been attached - by a jocular colleague - to the details of a North London dentist highly recommended for its caring treatment of drill phobics such as herself.
