Dismissed teacher stays on register

An english teacher who was dismissed after failing to mark GCSE coursework has been allowed to remain a registered teacher.

Gregory Malone, formerly of Cowbridge Comprehensive in the Vale of Glamorgan, caused two colleagues to become ill with stress after they had to stand in and mark the work of some 50 Year 11 pupils, a panel of the General Teaching Council for Wales heard this week.

Mr Malone, who was not present at the hearing, was found guilty of unacceptable professional conduct.

He received a five-year conditional registration order, meaning he has to inform any future employer of the order.

Margaret Evans, head of Cowbridge, said Mr Malone had admitted failing to assess work properly at an earlier school disciplinary hearing and was dismissed.

She said two staff had become ill with stress after having to stand in at the last minute to mark the work.

Ms Evans told the panel: “I do not believe (Mr Malone) appreciated the impact of his actions and appeared to be shocked when dismissed. I think he felt that he would be given a slap on the wrist and allowed to return to work.”
