Government efforts to cut bureaucracy evidently continue apace. Graham Lane is chairman of education in Newham and has been a governor at Tollgate primary, in the ward where he is a councillor, for more than 20 years. He has been sent a letter instructing him to present himself at the school with his passport to prove he is Graham Lane. “I suppose this is all because of some new regulations but you would have thought they would know me by now,” said a bemused Mr Lane.
