Dyslexia help for serving soldiers

13th October 2000, 1:00am
WE read with interest the recent feature about adult dyslexia in your paper (“Don’t write off the grown-ups”, FE Focus, September 22) in which you report on the joint project between this charity, the British Dyslexia Association, and the British Army.

However, so that professionals advising young dyslexic people are not misled, we wish to make the point that new recruits into the Army are not screened for dyslexia routinely.

Dyslexia training of education officers aims toensure support is available for serving soldiers already in a regiment. A structured procedure offers an initial interview, screening, assessment and remediation. Confidentiality is respected at all times.

The British Dyslexia Association is delighted to be working with the Army in making sure that dyslexic soldiers have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
