When TES asked teachers to submit their questions for its one-off webchat with England’s education secretary Nicky Morgan, hundreds tweeted #askNicky.

Subjects ranged from local difficulties such as Sats and strikes, to more universal subjects including workload problems and disadvantage.

First up was @secretteacher6, who asked: “What education benefit does a child stand to gain from resitting Sats?”

Another focus was teacher training after it was revealed last week that applications in England and Wales had fallen by 12 per cent in the past year. @LauHF1 asked: “How do you plan on preventing more brilliant teachers quitting before five years in the profession?”

On workload, @maelstephen asked: “Are you going to make any effort to tackle teacher workload or was your survey just window dressing?”

And @flelroy was concerned about the fate of headteachers: “With the football manager mindset, why should I work as a leader in the turnaround of a `failing’ school?” he asked.

Meanwhile, @AynieLR had a broader focus when she tweeted: “How will you tackle the problem of children coming to school every day too hungry and too tired to learn?”
