Freak! The very word screams fear and fascination. Our curiosity about people who are not like “us” is mixed with our terror of being like “them”.

The photographer Diane Arbus said that “people go through life dreading they’ll have a traumatic experience. Freaks were born with their traumas.

They’ve already passed their test in life. They’re artistocrats.” Take a good look at their story on page 8.

And while we’re pondering the frailty of being human, consider life without the flushing loo, the subject of our poster.
