The leading employers’ organisation is to continue its programme of “talking up” the work of schools.
The Confederation of British Industry, conscious that employers are often seen to do little for education except criticise its products, is to conduct a second “celebration bus tour” of Scottish schools, chosen for their excellent practice.
It has written to more than 500 schools seeking applications, the deadline for which was last Friday. Sixteen schools will be selected by the end of August and each will receive pound;1000, to be spent on anything that will help improve the school.
Graham Moore,who chairs the CBI’s education committee and is director of BT Scotland, commented: “Throughout Scotland, its schools, young people and teachers use innovative ideas and projects to benefit education and local communities, yet they don’t often get the recognition they deserve.”
BT will provide funding over two years to expand a website dedicated to the project which will feature the work of the chosen schools. Another object of the exercise is to promote links between business and schools, which are facilitated by local branches of the Bank of Scotland.
The bus, which will be boarded by figures from business, government and education, will tour between October 16 and 25. Last year’s bus travelled 1,300 miles with 120 passengers.
