Celebrations are planned in Bristol and the South West to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. They include: a street party on his birthday weekend, April 8-9, culminating in the switching on of new lights at the Clifton suspension bridge; 100,000 free copies of a biography of his life and work for schoolchildren; and a programme ensuring every pupil in Bristol gets a chance to learn about Brunel and visit exhibitions being mounted at SS Great Britain, the At-Bristol science centre and Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery covering his life and work, achievements in science and engineering, and the art of the industrial age.
