Exclusions crackdown

EVERY PUPIL at risk of exclusion or who is already excluded from school in Midlothian must now have an immediate action plan devised by teachers and support services. Schools have been instructed to hold a multidisciplinary meeting if pupils are excluded for more than two days.

Among a range of initiatives, the council has set up vocationally based provision for 10 pupils in their final months of school and offers short-term placements for younger secondary pupils in difficulty. Setting up a support and reintegration service has been a key development, councillors were told this week.

The service devises individualised learning programmes for excluded pupils, supports primary teachers and pupils where behaviour is a problem and runs an off-site base.

Further developments include bases in each secondary to support pupils who have clashed with teachers.
