Generations of children with Down’s syndrome may have under-achieved at school because too little was expected of them, according to research by Manchester and Stirling universities. Current thinking is that only about 6 per cent of Down’s children benefiot from going to school, but the researchers say that the majority can learn in a little of the 3Rs. About 9,000 children in the UK have Down’s, which occurs in around one in 600 births.
