Fiery facelift

The arsonists who torched Bellahouston Academy in Glasgow in 1991 were obviously mindful of more cerebral matters when they carried out their dastardly deed. The school motto is “Feed the Flame”.

This week, the school was re-opened after a Pounds 6.4 million refurbishment and a few difficult years. Lately, the 750-pupil secondary has been encamped on two sites, separated by the M8, as the original building underwent its facelift.

A mighty relieved man is headteacher, Dr Jim Cassels. An assiduous heidie, he had taken to supervising pupils making the crossing over the motorway footbridge.

Equally assiduous locals had reported to the police a strange-looking man observing pupils.
