A secondary teacher has been awarded pound;196,000 in compensation after winning a claim of constructive dismissal after she left her post following a deterioration in her eyesight.

Gaynor Meikle, 57, taught domestic science at Gedling school, Nottingham, for 11 years.

Chris Benson, senior legal officer at the Disability Rights Commission, which supported the case, said: “All her employer needed to do was enlarge the font size of her teaching materials so Mrs Meikle could read them. Not doing so has meant losing a valuable member of staff.”

Nottingham council said it had been a complicated case but said it was “pleased” Mrs Meikle had continued to do supply work at other Nottinghamshire schools since leaving Gedling in 2000.
