Formulaic teaching was our intended foe

My last school was obsessed with the numbers, and hours and hours were spent drawing up lists of students who are just about a D who could get a C. I was in a geography lesson on support and a child asked: “What is the capital of Brazil?” He was told by the teacher: “You don’t need that for the test!” It’s a sham.
